Adrienne: I recently met Corey Howard, RKC, CK-FMS at the Marketing Mastermind Intensive workshop in San Diego. In addition to being in incredible athletic shape, Corey and his wife, Tricia both maintain super busy schedules. During the very brief breaks at the workshop several of us got to know each other a little better, and I was intrigued to learn about some of the rules and strategies they have been using personally and with their clients to achieve great results and healthy lifestyle changes.
Corey Howard: When fellow RKC, Adrienne Harvey asked me to write an article discussing the eating philosophy I use with my clients, I panicked! Read More…
Adrienne is brilliant with food, recipes, eating habits, and so on. What can I say that will sound half way intelligent as her? One thing I can tell you with complete certainty… I’ve heard it all! People have tried everything; Atkins, South Beach, vegetarian, Grapefruit, Paleo, Warrior, or the Omega Diet. It’s insane. Everyone tries something, and generally speaking they fall off the wagon and gain the weight back. So what do I do with my clients? I try to make it ridiculously simple- no calorie counting, and simple rules. I know everyone is super busy so here are two simple rules I implement with my clients that have worked well.
- No alcohol for your first 4 weeks– I ask this for a few reasons. First, alcohol is a highly refined sugar and enters the body with no minerals, vitamins, or enzymes to aid in its breakdown. Most sugar products pass through the digestive system before entering the blood stream, but not alcohol. Alcohol is absorbed directly into the bloodstream though the stomach, where it makes an immediate assault on your minerals, vitamins, enzymes, and insulin. We need vitamins and minerals for optimum health and to look young and fresh and perform at our optimum level. Second, alcohol is a diuretic. Have you ever had a few drinks and noticed soon your making several trips to the bathroom? That’s alcohol doing its job to dehydrate you and deplete your body of necessary electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and calcium… all of which are important in building new muscle. Finally a few too many drinks at night prevent your body’s ability to recover. Alcohol consumption prevents you from reaching the deepest level of sleep, and this will prevent you from recovering sufficiently from your workouts. You can go back to an occasional glass of wine after your 4 weeks, just give me the 4 weeks. Trust me, it works!
- Half way through your day, switch the rest of your meals to protein and green vegetables. I jokingly tell people at the end of a consultation that if they screw up everything I tell them and only use this tip, they will shed some pounds. Honestly, that’s happened. Most people skip breakfast and rock through the first half of their day fueled by coffee. Then at night they have a casserole, or pizza, or whatever is fast and crappy, then feel tired and miserable, pass out and repeat it again the next day! I need people to flip it. Think about it, if you wake up and eat waffles with eggs and a cup of coffee, and a sandwich mid morning, then you’ve most likely consumed enough complex carbs to fuel you the rest of the day. So if at lunch you switch over to protein and green veggies for your last three small meals, things like chicken breast and salad, steak and asparagus, fish and string beans, then you’re going to finish strong with appropriate food choices and go to bed at night tired and ready to sleep. Not to mention these choices are much easier on your digestive system! Trust me, it works!
So there it is; my 2 simple rules. Now don’t just assume that’s all I do… but if you’re looking to get the scale dropping then these two suggestions haven’t let me down yet! I will also give new clients a food list that shows what foods are complex carbs, proteins, fats, and fibrous carbs (green veggies). This seems to help people piece meals together. No magic pills, enemas, or crazy grapefruit consumption. Just eat the right foods at the right time and you’ll feel better in no time. Trust me, it works!
