Dear Northern Friends,
Sorry to gloat about the good weather we are having this weekend, but it was so nice outside today that a friend and I decided to walk to a nearby park and set up our slacklines. The very cool thing was also realizing that the next time, we could pick up picnic items on the way and really turn it into a day long outdoor fun time. Can’t complain about how it turned out though, and because I remembered that there were 2 additional pedestrian entry points to the park, the walk there was even more fun. Walking through nature trails to reach slackline-friendly areas was a LOT than just streets and sidewalks…
Amusingly, the nature trails also took us between two weddings in progress, one of which had some very fun looking giant lawn games going on, a giant version of connect four and even more exciting, a giant Jenga-type thing. We are going to buy a giant Jenga thing… because the idea of playing with Jenga and slacklines and any of the other fun toys that get hauled outside (kettlebells, maces, pull up bar, Ultimate Sandbag, parallettes, sandbells, battling ropes, Neuro-Grips*, slosh pipes….. etc. etc. etc.) is just too fun to resist. Seriously like some kind of crazy grown-up funtime workout challenge with a dexterity, balance, focus challenge. And well… GIANT JENGA! The mind boggles. Fortunately, good judgement prevailed and we didn’t run into the party and try to play…. everyone was dressed up and it would have been rude of us…
Slacklining is a really neat challenge, while my balance and coordination are normally very good, I find slacklining to be incredibly difficult. It’s been a whole lot of fun to learn to do something that can only be mastered by trying and failing and failing and failing and failing and failing and trying and OMG I can do it now! The other cool thing about slacklining is how you can really start to feel the flow state happen. When I come back to doing any sort of focused work afterwards its always very improved. And then it also feels refreshing, like some kind of nap, but without the grogginess.
Anyway, while it can be more exciting to focus on wild and crazy workouts and maximal physical challenges, it’s also very important to remember to take time to recover, rest and refocus after those things too. (And to eat great stuff). What are your favorite active rest activities? Feel free to leave some comments below!
*Working with Neuro-Grips “supersetted” with slackline walks is a really focused and interesting challenge.
