Macho Mojito Protein Shake

A simple but differently flavored grass fed whey protein shake
Course: Drinks, shake, smoothie, Snack
Keyword: high protein, protein

Ingredients

  • 1/2 juice of one lime save the other half of the lime for garnish or for a companion
  • 2 scoops of vanilla grassfed whey See notes below for recommended brand
  • 5 fresh mint leaves
  • 1 1/2 cup cold filtered water

Instructions

  • A friend who I've known since high school was asking me about protein powders today. While a lot of my friends and peers in the fitness industry have a wide range of feelings about supplements--ranging from "Buy this brand, they sponsor me!" to "No way, I hate every supplement ever made!" I've always felt like it's a good idea for me to have a handy canister of a very high quality, organic grassfed whey and/or a high quality plant based (but non-soy) protein powder like Healthy Skoop's B-Strong. I don't drink shakes all that often, but when I do, it's because I probably really need it. Sometimes I'll make a 1-scoop version of this recipe as a kind of post-workout-while-I-am-cooking-dinner appetizer treat. Sometimes I'll make a shake as an afternoon snack if I've had an early start that day. Point being, no I don't drink shakes every day, but I do like to have the option for a high protein meal or snack with minimum effort.
  • The origin of the recipe below mainly comes from a few ideas. The first of which was the fact that I had some mint from the neighbor and limes were on sale (and filling up my fridge). Also, I'd recently felt some indignation at the "juvenile flavors" of most protein shakes these days and you can't convince me that anyone wants to drink that much fake-tasting chocolate. Finally, while I don't drink anymore, I can still appreciate some of the more inventive flavor combinations of various coctails (I'll share my "Cape Codder" shake at some point) and a departure from the chocolate, chocolate peanut butter, faux strawberry, etc. world of the usual protein shake fare. Hope you enjoy this one as much as I do!
  • I really find that the Reserveage brand grass fed vanilla whey protein works best for this recipe. It has just the right gentle balance of sweetness (from stevia, but in such a way that is really magic) to make this work!
  • Remove the stems from the mint leaves then blend everything well in a blender. Add a few ice cubes if you wish. Delicious!!!
