I’m incredibly honored to be interviewed by new RKC Sebastian Müller on his blog. He asks some great questions, some of which I know others have been curious about too –
Here’s a little bit of it –
Sebastian Müller: When did you first discover kettlebells?
Adrienne Harvey: I first discovered kettlebells around 2008 when I was looking online for alternatives to working out in a gym. I found an article by Lauren Brooks, and really liked what she had to say. The simplicity of the moves and the results she obviously obtained were very interesting, through her link I found DragonDoor.com I bought a few books and kettlebell to try at home, but soon realized I really needed to find an instructor. After looking for over a year, I ended up meeting RKC II, Tim Shuman in Orlando, Florida. I trained with Tim for over a year before attending the RKC Certification Workshop in Orlando, Florida in October of 2010.Sebastian Müller: You’re the one at Dragon Door, when it comes to making interviews with top trainers. How did this come about?Adrienne Harvey: After the RKC in Orlando, I decided to interview Senior RKC, Franz Snideman for my blog GiryaGirl.com which was brand new at the time. I was on Franz’s team and really admired his teaching style and knowledge. The interview went very well, and was got a lot of attention, some of which was from Dragon Door. They asked me to interview a few people on the phone for their website at first, and it grew from there. I really enjoy interviewing everyone, the questions I ask are things I genuinely want to know. There are some very incredible and inspiring people in the RKC and involved with Dragon Door. I feel very privileged to be able to talk to so many of them. Usually, I conduct interviews in person at workshops, but sometimes via phone or Skype if someone is located far away.Sebastian Müller: Your site Giryagirl.com has a very good category, “Kettlebell Workouts.” Are these all workout routines created for your kettlebell classes or are these primarily workout routines from your private Trainingsessions?Adrienne Harvey: Actually it’s a bit of both. And, the workouts on GiryaGirl.com are inspired by a variety of sources. Many times, they are workouts I’ve created for one of my kettlebell classes, but sometimes they are from my own training. I love to create workouts which are inspired by what I see at workshops. Other times the workouts are inspired by new books from Dragon Door, or from something discussed in an interview.I like to write workouts around themes too, working within certain parameters or boundaries can help with creativity and add fun to a workout. I love the challenge of working with a group of people with mixed skill and fitness levels. It’s a fun to create a workout so that everyone can fully participate, feel good about the workout, and be sufficiently challenged. The first obligation is always safety, and making sure that the intensity is appropriate, the workout must also help the participants progress toward their individual fitness goals. Most of the people who train with me want to become stronger, lose fat, relieve stress, or just keep fit with a fun challenge. My advice for people who are struggling to create their own workouts is to study the workouts of established, experienced, instructors. The new Dragon Door e-book, The RKC Book of Strength and Conditioning, is an excellent place to start.
Sebastian Müller: Besides training with kettlebells, you train also much by the books of Paul “Coach” Wade and Al Kavadlo. What does your training look like, and which exercises do you like the most? What are your top five kettlebell and/or bodyweight exercises?
