As many of you may have already gathered, even though I do train individual clients, help prospective RKCs, RKC-IIs, PCCs to prepare for workshops, lead a kettlebell and bodyweight focused small group class, teach occasional out of town classes/workshops, and when asked ALWAYS am happy to help teach a PCC workshop, training others is not the main thing I do “as a job”. I kinda don’t even like the word “job” as it implies a lot of negative things for people. People think I work all the time, and well if I thought of what I do as “work” then they might be right. When I think about “work-life balance” it gets confusing, having been a small business owner since 1999 and choosing things which are more enjoyable and learning-based than drudgery. Don’t get me wrong there’s been plenty of drudgery, it’s not all ice cream and unicorns over here. It’s definitely not ice cream as I don’t digest that stuff too well.
But ANYWAY…
I spent a lot of time either on the road, in my home office, or various coffeeplaces that have decent wifi. And a lot of this time is spent… *GASP* sitting down. OH NOOOOO! You may say, “Sitting is the new smoking!!!!!” Fortunately there’s a lot else that happens too. For instance frequent hopping up and doing things like a few pull ups, push ups, kettlebell swings (using the Pomodoro technique timer is great for this). I also like to make sure that wherever I’m working I have “opportunities for walking” That’s also a general requirement of where I like to live. I love access to safe walking areas to food, small errands, coffee etc. Even if it’s raining… no problem. So metro areas and reasonably upscale neighborhoods/shopping areas are what I look for… even if it means paying a little more for a lot less square footage. So even on a “sedentary” workday like today I was able to walk to go get lunch, snacks, and coffee, which was a good time to relax, move, and above all something about walking lets my mind sort out various small problems which might have stumped me at the desk.
In order to gain access to some areas for creative projects, further learning, and to eventually build some custom lifting gear, I decided to join a local Makerspace which is also doubling nicely for me as a coworking area. While this is not an overly social place (good) it has allowed already for some stimulating networking and friendly interaction. Something that I knew I needed just a little teeny tiny bit more of in the day to day. I also have a fair amount of knowledge in computers/electronics/audio/video that may be helpful in trade with others here. In other words, look forward to some serious quality improvements coming to the podcast shortly!
It’s also located near very nice areas for outdoor workouts and maybe just a wee bit of street workout style fun too. You’ll see!
Anyhow the following video explains the food and walking… and below that video I am going to outline a workout video I TRIED to stream to you live last night before it got cut off (grrrrr iPhone, GRRRRRRRR!) While I will try to record it again tonight just before sunset, I wanted to make sure you got the workout anyway…
Below is the workout written out, then a video of the workout in realtime. Unfortunately the time I had for the workout had the most interruptions, causing longer rest times than I would have preferred. I also went out of frame a few times having gotten distracted 🙁 Will do better next time, but at least you get the general idea
Using a moderately heavy 20kg for me at the moment kettlebell I did the following short but fun full body kettlebell workout:
- 20 two hand kettlebell swings
- 10 push ups
- one press right, one press left
- one press right, and walk
- one press left and walk
- 20 kettlebell swings
- 10 push ups
- 10 goblet squats
- 1 clean right and walk
- 1 clean left and walk
- 20 kettlebell swings
- 10 pushups
- 5 rows right
- 5 rows left
- suitcase deadlift right and walk
- suitcase deadlift left and walk
So again, really short, but thats ok! I’ll likely do yet another “skills” session later tonight (during laundry time) including even more bridges and handstands…
