Quick Workout for Hectic Times, Kettlebells, and Battling Rope!

I'm still working on editing a fun video for you with an especially interesting circuit (there's some highly functional but silly looking parts to it, thanks to my general appearance, some kids at the park gawked at what I was doing, but were unsure if it was "safe" to openly mock me.  Thanks, hairdo!)  Anyway that is still in the works. Look for it this weekend, so you can try it and hopefully not get laughed at by kids at the park as you work though this unusual combo!

It's been a fairly crazy week... (click here to skip the yabbering and get to the workout) Here's some sampling of the odds and ends of the past several days... fist-bumping my now-vintage studio monitors that I absolutely swear by, sweet potato muffins I made while waiting for a video to compile, landing a tiny nanodrone on a yoga brick, resistant starch cold lentils, reading from and writing stuff in the gray workout Moleskine of doom for myself and small group, buying your Granny's unwanted Limoges, 3d printing, and Counter Culture coffee.  And that's just the stuff  can show you, it's not the writing, editing, calls, interim sysadmin responsibilities, and scores of other tasks.

Instagram Recap....

In order to "earn" the 5 visit package of cryosauna treatments I paid for earlier this week, it's been a fairly hefty workout time as well. I owe you a detailed review of Keith Weber's stellar Extreme Kettlebell Cardio Workout DVD Vol. 3 which is especially awesome, instructors will want to both do the workouts and then use pieces of the workouts for their classes. The review will include some examples of how to do this, and how to step some of the things down a notch when necessary.

Three Kettlebell Get-Up Game Changers... (and a bonus controversial one) With VIDEO

Hope I’m not giving the impression that the get-up is chock full of pitfalls, peril, and potential catastrophe. But I do know that the get-up can be overwhelming and frustrating not only for kettlebell newbies but also for people trying to teach it. This post is aimed at both the people who may be new to the get up as well as the people who might be TEACHING the get up.

First of all, if you haven’t already checked it out, and if you’re having a hard time with your get-up from the very first few movements, please check out my “Get-Up Pet Peeves” post and video. Speaking of video… even if you have no aspirations to become a YouTube or Instagram star, one of the most effective training tools you have might be in your pocket or gym bag right now—the camera on your phone! The common mistakes mentioned below can all be easily spotted by a training partner, your instructor or coach, or… if neither are available, you can check yourself by taking a short video.

Ask GiryaGirl: A Kettlebell Technique Get-Up PET PEEVE and How to Fix It...

How to fix a kettlebell technique problem with the get-up

First of all, before anyone thinks I'm about to get all preachy over here about the get-up, let's get some things straight... many years ago before even training with an RKC instructor (I had a hard time finding one at the time) I tried to teach myself the get-up.  And I really wish that I had video of that to show you, because I would somehow end up facing the opposite direction by the time I got back to the floor!  At the time that's not what I wanted to do, but now I want to figure out a safe/legit way to do that and use it in a kind of flowing kettlebell circuit etc.  I love to put those things together.  The point of that story is, that until I did really begin to seriously train with an instructor (and start to prepare for my first RKC workshop) I DID NOT LIKE the get-up!  It was frustrating, complex, seemingly illogical, gaaahh!  Seven parts?! WHAT?!?!

Fortunately, breaking it down into its component parts solved a lot of problems, and even today I love to use the individual portions of the get-up along with the full get-up in workouts.  Working on those small but powerful chunks one at a time--and their transitions can add a cool variety to your workout as well as strengthen your understanding and enjoyment of the full on regulation get-up. Good times!!!

Q: Should my straight leg pop up/fly up/etc. during the first part of the Turkish get-up?
A: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! And here's a video about why and how to fix it!

A Short But Fun Underground Strength Inspired Exercise Break... After an Adventure!

It's been an interesting weekend... getting a lot done, maybe a little too much because as the sun started to go down today I found myself wanting to go outside and play for lack of a better term.  Some may refer to this as a "workout" but considering what I did and how fun it was I think it was more like a slightly more grown up version of playing in the yard.  Unfortunately, it got a little too dark outside for me to shoot a video of it. Thankfully with the timing and the holiday weekend, I had a big chunk of the parking lot to myself. I am NOT the weirdest neighbor here by a long shot so it would have been ok if someone saw me.  Many of the people in my neighborhood are active in some way--we have a guy in his late 70s who regularly practices Convict Conditioning style push ups on the railings, there's someone across the street who does sledgehammer training, plenty of kayakers, stand up paddleboarders, cyclists, etc around here so my antics are pretty much par for the course--except for when I climb things and leave little footprints in unlikely, oddly far-from-the-ground places...
