Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil

January 16, 2012 By Adrienne Leave a Comment

Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil

This is one of those products that once you start using it, you find that you use it EVERY DAY.  And its actually the only cooking oil I have in the pantry at the moment (dark sesame oil doesn’t count – that’s a flavoring additive).  I was originally introduced to Tropical Traditions by an older friend from the dog park who had a similar interest in health foods. He swore by Tropical Traditions coconut oil and had been using it to cook eggs every morning. It seems to work especially well with cast iron cookwear (have even seasoned cast iron with it) – of which I’m a HUGE fan.  Likewise, many of the recipes in Primal Blueprint and similar Paleo recipe books call for coconut oil – this one is the one to use as far as my opinion is concerned. Then there are just some recipes where using this coconut oil approaches the sublime – and the first thing to come to mind would of course be Thai style coconut milk based curry dishes.  Initially sauteing the onion and/or meats in this coconut oil really brings a unity to the overall dish.  In the past I’ve tried to use other oils for this purpose but they always seemed to fight on some bizarre level.  If for nothing else, if you make a lot of coconut curries, you need this coconut oil.  Other things which really benefit from the slight coconutty flavor (which is easily masked when necessary) are the Primal Blueprint coconut flour pancakes and pumpkin muffins.  Pretty much anything which calls for other coconut or tree nut ingredients will be really enhanced by this oil.

I have also used it to condition my hair/skin and as an ingredient in nut/seed-based energy bars (recipe forthcoming).  Some other brands of coconut oils have little to no coconut essence left to them, and have usually been processed very heavily by machines – according to Tropical Traditions, this is the only coconut oil hand processed in small batches.
