I was house/dog sitting for a friend of mine and noticed that he had one of the earlier DVD releases from Dragon Door, Super Joints. I hadn’t seen it in a while, and since the joint mobility warm up that I lead my kettlebell classes through is largely derived from the exercises Pavel introduces on that DVD, it was certainly worth yet another viewing. Really good stuff on this extremely informative DVD.
The production is very basic – it is well lit and Pavel is easy to understand – but if you are expecting custom theme songs, slick transitions and animated menus, I would remind you to check your priorities, Comrade, and stop being such a sissy 🙂 There is no brightly colored spandex worn here and it looks to have been recorded in some sort of secret underground dojo/dungeon where men are simply NOT allowed to wear shirts (I was slightly disappointed that the famously anti-shirt-wearing Glenn Danzig didn’t pop in for a song at the end, but whatever…). Pavel Tsatsouline guides you through 29 valuable exercises for joint mobility, flexibility and strength – even though I do many of these almost daily in my own practice, I found myself pausing the DVD and taking notes of additional cues, variation to improve the warm up portion of my kettlebell and boot camp classes. Progressions are given for some of the exercises which require a given level of flexibility to start.
To sum up – a concise and very useful flexibility and strength-flexibility exercises that all have immediate applications for athletes, martial artists, dancers, weight lifters, kettlebell practicioners, and the general public.
