Ask GiryaGirl: I Only Have One or Two Kettlebells, What Else Can I Do? What is Your Skincare Routine?

Ask GiryaGirl

First off, there's been a TON of especially great stuff on the Dragon Door blogs these past couple weeks/months... If you haven't already, visit and bookmark the RKC Blog, the PCC Blog, and the Strong Medicine Blog for a curated steady stream of great info every week.

Q: I only have one kettlebell, it's the one I started with so it's a little light for most of the things I've been practicing... what do I do until I can order more later this month?

A: Last week's RKC blog from Josh Henkin brought up some ideas that are really great if you have or haven't already heard them.  They're extremely valuable for kettlebell instructors, enthusiasts, and especially people who like to work out at home or when they just have access to one or two kettlebells.  As we all know, a good quality kettlebell like the ones from Dragon Door will last a lifetime, but they are not cheap.  Personally, I think it's a great idea to just get one good kettlebell for a while until you're ready to step up--instead of getting a crummy cheap kettlebell that chews up your hands. Josh's article has all kinds of great ideas for when you're working with limited kettlebell resources... or even if you have nearly pairs of every size as I do, for those times when you just want to take one to the park, the beach, the lake, wherever and get a complete workout with just one kettlebell.

Some highlights from his post with some additional commentary:

Revenge of the Franken-Workout!!

Revenge of the Franken-Workout

These past couple of weeks there have been a number of really cool ideas out there in the kettlebell and advanced fitness world. These combined with the need of the kettlebell small group to work on technique inspired me to create this intermediate-level full body kettlebell workout with a middle portion that focuses on fine tuning technique for kettlebell swings and snatches.  There's some extra stuff added in to make this a full body workout including an "extra credit" mini circuit at the end.

A Challenging But Oddly Stress-Relieving Workout

The Encyclopedia of Underground Strength and Conditioning by Zach Even-EshThis fun challenge I wrote up for a friend and I became a neat strength endurance challenge of the "accidental cardio" variety (in places).  I've been gearing up for Zach Even-Esh's Underground Strength Coach workshop in Orlando, and essentially using that as an excuse to come up with more "General preparedness" workouts inspired by his book the Encyclopedia of Underground Strength and Conditioning.  Not to go too far into this next subject, but as a lot of these sort of workshops are usually attended by a bunch of guys, I make it my personal responsibility to be super prepared as to not be needing any special treatment.   I take great pride in that sort of thing and NEVER want to be the reason that a workshop is slowed down. Gotta be able "to hang" as "they" say. Right?

A GiryaGirlTV YouTube Trailer, Last Night's Workout, and What's on the Horizon!

Have been getting some very fun feedback on this first foray into "iMovie Movie Trailers". Decided to finally start making my YouTube channel a little cooler, starting with it's own little movie trailer below:

A Bear (Complex) in the Park -- Workout for Kettlebells and Ultimate Sandbags!

Bear in the Park Sandbag and Kettlebell WorkoutKept going back and forth with how to "rank" this one (I'd type out one line, and then think "oh yeah advanced" type out the next and think "intermediate" then realized... if you are comfortable with all the exercises in the workout then the "level" is really determined by the weights you choose, and the length of the rest breaks you take... so since I had to pick something, I left it on "intermediate".  It should also be noted that when I did the workout, I used a Power Ultimate Sandbag for some of it, and a Strength Ultimate Sandbag to just test a couple things out... before it felt like I was going to see stars or something. Suffice it to say the difference between a smaller, lighter sandbag and a heavier, bigger, floppier sandbag was stealthily extreme).

Heavily influenced by both the DVRT system of Ultimate Sandbag training AND Zach Even-Esh's Encyclopedia of Underground Strength and Conditioning, this was a fun workout for a mind-obliteratingly weird and mildy stressful (understatement) day.  Fortunately (or rather unfortunately) my good friend and training partner had had a similar day and was up to this challenge.  I knew that with both of our wobbly mental states it would be a good idea to have this one written down with alternatives if we (or the terrain) became uncoopertive. (Example: this workout originally included battling rope throws, but when we got to the designated park found the grass to be very damp).
