Managed to catch a real heck of a cold, which doesn’t happen often at all. This is one of those that makes me thankful to be working from home anyway this week. BUT, it’s also a really good excuse to concoct things, and well I’ve always been a fan of that. Of course I’ve already used the cold as an excuse to visit The Salt Room again (click here for a past blog post about that) where I very unceremoniously half-awake-half-asleep feverdreamed some universally motivational ideas better suited to someone with much MUCH more personal charisma. This did also seem to have a great effect on my general breathing too… but I’ll blame the salt for that. Also, I seem to have gone crazy with Amazon items below, but at least they are relevant?!?!
In an intuitive moment, figured out that the extra coconut oil I felt compelled to add to the past few mornings’ blended “bulletproof coffee” actually seems to have quite the anti microbial purpose. The lauric acid in coconut oil is reported to help break down the lipid layer in certain viruses and bacteria… huh… so yes, of course I threw another spoonful in there. Another variation that seemed to be almost immediately effective was black coffee, Kerrygold unsalted butter, coconut oil (all that is normal) plus extra coconut oil and a heaping half teaspoon of actual-factual legitimate cinnamon (most sold in stores is actually cassia, but more on that another time). In addition to its tasty flavor, cinnamon is also supposed to have anti-bad-bugs properties too, so I thought, why not double up!
Other ways I found to enjoy ingesting odd amounts of coconut oil have also included – hot strong jasmine tea, 1 tbsp coconut oil, 2 tbsp coconut milk blended to a froth. While neither of these concoctions are recommended, they are both much more pleasant than things I’ve done in the past which have included baking and eating an entire bulb of elephant garlic (2002), boiling a traditional Native American medicinal root from the Pacific Northwest then quickly slamming down the strong celery-dirt-like water (2004), eating an entire bag of tangerines and a baked bulb of elephant garlic (2005 approx). Needless to say I won’t be setting any PRs this week in terms of lifting.
Can’t give you all my remedy secrets, mainly because I’m not sure how well they might work for anyone else!! That being said, I’ll be happily continuing to see what other weird things I can concoct to eat, drink, and soak in for the next couple of days. Though planned for this afternoon will be a grassfed whey protein (vanilla) shake spiked with a packet of “Emergen-C” powder for a weird 1,000mg of vitamin C enhanced orangesicle flavor adventure. Normally the only time I have “Emergen-C” is at a workshop as it always seems to make an appearance at large Dragon Door events on the table next to the water coolers. Needless to say I have a warm and fuzzy feeling about it because of that! LOL!!
Unlike some folks, I take a complete break from working out when/if I am sick in any way. Everyone’s different, but I’ve personally found that eating the best in nutrition that I can find combined with plenty of rest seems to expedite the getting-well process for me. There will be plenty of time for feats of strength later. That being said, it is hard to watch my friends online do awesome stuff and not be compelled to try it. Oh well. Here’s hoping not to get too antsy. At the least I’ll get caught up on some different tasks that require a sedentary approach… :/
