Rings of Power by Mike GIllette

Rings of Power by Mike Gillette Cool new book from Mike Gillette about Ring Training for all fitness levels. Being on this shoot with Mike was like working with a real live action hero! (And I got to put a cinderblock on him too!) Mike knows his stuff and shares everything you need to know for his versatile go-anywhere ring training.  Full progressions of every exercise, workout plans, and all the know-how to take the training as far as you wish. Good stuff, and yes, that's me on the left side of the cover  :)

The "Garage Band" Kettlebell and Bodyweight Workout

Long ago, when I was a teenager, kids would get together with various musical instruments, take over the family garage or basement and (usually) make a terrible racket. Sometimes decent bands would form this way, or decent enough bands.  Though much like the style of exercise many of us do, the value was in the practice, and there might ultimately be no great competition or "performance" at the end of it all. Sure, you might open for some college kids' band, or maybe get to play out at a dive bar, but the real "gains" and experiences seem to happen right there in the garage.

Garage Band Kettlebell and Bodyweight Workout

Note that in this case "garage band" is to be taken literally and not meant to reference the Apple program. Not that there's anything wrong with Garage Band, it just doesn't suit this metaphor.  Any other Gen-Xers out there who had a musical project (terrible or otherwise)? Tell us about it or link to it in the comments if you dare! :)

Anyway, I'd had quite enough of of computer related work yesterday and had a little bit of time. I chose 4 kettlebells (drums, bass, guitar, keys? HAHA) and decided to throw down a little in the car port.

Power! DVD From Joe DeFranco of DeFranco Training Systems and Jim Smith of Diesel Crew

Type of Product:
DVDs and Videos
  • Well organized
  • Great explanations of concepts - presented in a way that non-physicists can easily understand.  Intro explanations are also concise.
  • Some exercises shown in slow motion which is not only educational but really fun to watch
  • REALLY impressive athletes in the video - be warned they make it look easy!  These are tough drills/exercise and there are 90 of them. NINETY. (That's a lot)
  • The volume levels tend to fluctuate - mainly the transitional sounds are a tad loud... its like listen listen talking yes good, BOOOOM!! Ok, now that I've peeled myself off the ceiling I can learn some more cool stuff.
  • Manual comes as pdf on DVD, not a huge issue, but some people may have preferred a spiral bound manual.  Again, not a biggie
  • Not for everyone - many exercises are very advanced and meant for competitive athletes - not really a "con" more of a FYI.  Also most of the athletes in the video are what GiryaGirl refers to as "Football Dudes" which is fine, but just letting you know all the examples are performed by guys (again, not a prob, just an FYI, though I can think of a few of my super strong, super athletic women friends who would be great on this video).

Great explanation of power, speed, force development, and why you and/or the athletes you train need to work on these important skills.   The DVD is very well organized into sections for upper body, lower body, full body power, and more.   Some new approaches to plyometric exercises are in there as well.   Plenty of really challenging drills which could easily be incorporated into your advanced boot camp or group circuit classes.   I also saw a lot of drills which would be good for preparing clients for some of those obstacle course races which have recently become so popular.
