Ask GiryaGirl: How Can I Get Arms Like That? How Do Kettlebells Work on Arms?

At least once every other week, someone has an arm-related question for me.   Sometimes they're amusingly rhetorical questions, sometimes not.  But there is a whole lot of thinking about arms going on in the world--and with everyone.  So here's my answers to a few of the more common "arm related questions" that keep popping up.  And please feel free to add your own "arm questions" to the comments section below this entry too!

Q: You must do a TON of curls, right?
A: Nope!  In fact, up until a few months ago I hadn't done any form of barbell or dumbbell curls in a matter of years (I was staying in a hotel that had a gym and after doing some get ups while holding a straight curling bar for fun, I did a few random curls with the barbell for the sake of nostalgia). 

Q: Ok, Where do "the guns" come from?  

A: Well.. let's work up from the hands - all the grip work and extensor work (I'd encourage you to do some of this to balance out all that pull up bar gripping and kettlebell gripping you might be doing*) will really shape the forearms.  Kettlebells in particular with their intense work of the grip will ensure shapely strong-looking forearms on most men and women.  Ok well I know you were really wanting to know more about biceps... 

The Doorbuster: An MMA Timing Inspired Workout for Kettlebell, Bodyweight, and Optional Ultimate Sandbag

While I was working on Mike Medrano's interview for Dragon Door last week, the idea of creating a conditioning workout based on the timing of an MMA fight was just too intriguing not to try.

So, on Black Friday in total rebellion of the usual activities most folks were doing, we headed out to the park with a workout I jokingly named "the Doorbuster."  Get Ups feature prominently in this workout also because of Mike's interview -- he mentioned that they were especially useful for the MMA fighter as he'd used them to get up from the ground during a fight.  Thinking about what I know about the get up, it made sense -- even to someone who isn't directly involved with MMA.

An Interview with Zuzka Light, Internet Fitness Personality and Now an RKC Instructor!

There's several blog posts in the works for you, but in the mean time, I wanted to make sure you didn't miss this interview with Zuzka Light for Dragon Door.  Having seen her material for years, it was a lot of fun to actually talk for an interview.   She's really cool, very down to earth and has SEVEN dogs!  I heard one of them barking a little in the background of our call!   Anyhow, the interview is all about her start in fitness, blogging, and of course all about kettlebells and her new status as an RKC instructor! 

Two Unlikely Subjects... Kale Chips and Lunges?!?!

Don't these sound like well-behaved topics?!   Don't worry, I haven't gone off the goody-two-shoe deep end!  Until recently, even though I've liked kale for a long time cooked in dishes etc, and raw baby kale for salads, I hadn't had any especially good experiences with kale chips.    Especially the sort I tried to make myself a while ago which smelled horrible. They put me off of ever taking the idea of kale chips seriously... until now.
