Strange Human Truths Unearthed by Kettlebell Training

Strange Human Truths Unearthed By Kettlebells

A really cool article came out today on DragonDoor.com from Master RKC Chris Holder. Chris has a long history as a strength and conditioning coach for collegiate athletics. He’s observed some very interesting human behavior to say the least. In his article, two short quotes immediately jogged my brain and reminded me of several odd observations from my own experience as both a kettlebell user and as an instructor. Not that any “snowflakes” read this blog, but just in case any are right now, brace yourselves, Chris pulls no punches. LOL.

“What I can tell you is that 99.999% of the population have no idea what high tension is. They think they do, but they have no relationship with intensity.”

“Do you think a thirty-something desk jockey has the slightest understanding of what it means to push? Does that guy have a handle on what it means to cramp your glutes? Has he ever needed to brace his midsection to armor for a punch or kick? Has he ever pushed himself so hard that he’s familiar with the feeling of almost blacking out?”

Many years ago, I had no idea either. And I’m not going to judge. It took training with a TOUGH RKC Instructor back in Florida to realize where “the line” was, and frankly that was really part of the “secret sauce”. Framing it another way, most people don’t understand the power and potential power they have at their disposal. Most people have NO IDEA how much more they can improve their strength, conditioning, power, and endurance.

Here's What I Think About Dan John's New Book, The Hardstyle Kettlebell Challenge!

Dan John's The Hardstyle Kettlebell Challenge Book Cover

Was so proud to see that Dragon Door chose to include my endorsement of Dan John's book (out on eBook TODAY, paperback is coming in about 6 weeks) on the promo page and within the book itself. Here's how I feel about the book and how much I would recommend that you check it out if you are even vaguely interested in kettlebells!  If you love working with kettlebells or are an instructor, then this is pretty much a "must have". While it's easy to dismiss the HKC skills as for "beginners" that's a big mistake. Every time I revisit these solid basics, my training and my students' and clients' training improves too.

ANYWAY here was my response to the pre-release version of the book (which from what I can tell is the exact same as the ebook that went live today!

Much like the HKC itself, Dan John’s new book drills down to the absolute essentials of kettlebell strength and conditioning. Ultra practical, the HKC book includes all the necessities, how to use them, plus how to create programs for nearly any fitness level or athletic need.

While some may think that the three exercises of the HKC, the Swing, get-up, and goblet squat can’t possibly be enough, after 7 years as an RKC, and 6 as an RKC-II, Dan John’s HKC book has inspired me to simplify my training, and that of my clients—with great results. The “basics” are so important to Hardstyle kettlebell training, and this book doesn’t just make the case, it shows you exactly how to implement these crucial basics for any level, too.

I would recommend this book for kettlebell instructors and enthusiasts at all levels.

21 Kettlebell Workouts from Master RKC Dan John, Valuable Programming Tips, and What to Do After Your HKC Workshop!

HKC logoJust a quick note here for you to check out Dan John's new post on the RKC Blog.  Basically he outlines the importance and power of the one-day HKC workshop for trainers, instructors, coaches, and yes even serious fitness enthusiasts!

Then he goes on to describe 20 days of workouts to be done after the HKC experience to really help cement the training, understanding, and to bring about some very positive physical changes too.

I can't overstate the importance of this post from Dan John and hope that you enjoy reading it and putting parts of it into practice today!

First off, I want to introduce Sebastian Müller, RKC Team Leader over in Germany.  I was able to meet him at the 2013 PCC in Sweden (which was so epic that we are all still talking about it...).  Anyway, Sebastian has some absolutely great ideas about training, and this most recent he has contributed to the RKC Blog is certainly no exception!  While the kettlebell get-up is both loved and hated (and some people even oscillate between these two feelings DURING the exercise!) it's power and teaching potential cannot be denied.  If you are a beginner and a get-up hater, then take a few steps back and just work on the component parts of it.  Seriously -- taken as all 7 steps together, as a beginner a few years ago I was totally bewildered and overwhelmed by it.  Now? I can do them in my sleep (well ok I can do them before that necessary jolt of morning espresso).

The value of really learning and honing the get up is spelled out in detail here in Sebastian's article:
Five Things The Turkish Get-Up Teaches You About Life

So... you may have noticed (I hope) that I do not participate in the YouTube program of making $ from commercials on my videos.  Instead I've always opted to leave you useful product links in the video descriptions, mention products and things that I like in the videos which I may also be promoting in some capacity.  I only promote things I think are cool and that you will probably enjoy too.  SO you can look forward to NOT having to see some boring mainstream tv type commercial before any of my videos EVER.

Not a problem!   Also, for Florida, since it dipped under 50 degrees (Fahrenheit) that meant everyone was running around freezing, or were gleefully wearing any and all of the "cold weather clothes" that they never get to wear.  Seriously, you would have thought a bizzard was on the way, or that the ski lodge was next door.   I understand though, unless Floridians travel at all during the winter, we don't get to wear any cold weather things.  I'm sure people with fireplaces are hastily firing them up... A much more sane approach would be to check out the workout(s) below.

This certainly raised the temperatures across the board:

We warmed up with Primal Move then timed how long it took to complete 100 kettlebell swings (participants chose their kettlebells - both chose a moderate weight).  I am proud to say that everyone was able to do it in a single set, which is always nice to see.  It also means that next time they'll want to choose something maybe a little heavier? :) HAHA.
