Rings of Power by Mike GIllette

Rings of Power by Mike Gillette Cool new book from Mike Gillette about Ring Training for all fitness levels. Being on this shoot with Mike was like working with a real live action hero! (And I got to put a cinderblock on him too!) Mike knows his stuff and shares everything you need to know for his versatile go-anywhere ring training.  Full progressions of every exercise, workout plans, and all the know-how to take the training as far as you wish. Good stuff, and yes, that's me on the left side of the cover  :)

Two Quick Weekday Workouts for Kettlebells and More!

Short on Time Kettlebell Workouts

This past week was crazy busy, but now that I've got a little bit of time, there's two quick workouts to share!  One was indoors, the other outdoors, but both were fun in their own way and combined strength elements with a little bit of HIIT too. I've continued to enjoy using the fan bike for 8 all out sets of 20 seconds on, 10 seconds rest at the end of workouts. More about that near the end of this previous post.

For the first short workout, I'd been meaning to spend more "quality time" with a pair of 20kg kettlebells, so the workout is essentially centered around them. I find that getting in a fair amount of reps of standard presses with a 20kg kettlebell seems to really help my 24kg press and beyond. I need to get back into pressing the 28kg to be honest... I haven't tried in a while but I'm sure it's still fairly close if it isn't already there at least for one on a good day.

So, after a joint mobility warmup (very similar to the one included in my little eBook of random workouts I led in NYC last year) I continued the warm up with a bodyweight get-up on each side immediately followed with a single 20kg kettlebell get-up on each side. Get-ups are not only awesome to include in workouts, but I like to add a couple as part of a warm-up to "get everything working together" for lack of a better term.

Another Challenging Element to Try with Neuro-Grips, and Two Workouts

Until today, it hadn't occured to me that I'd always used the same grip with my Neuro-Grips... even at the Neuro-Grip Challenge book photoshoot... It's always been with the stem of the grip between my middle finger and ring finger. (Upper left in the photo below.)

Backyard Challenge! Using Everything in a Sequence

Crazy Backyard Challenge! Earlier today I was training someone with kettlebells and had also brought out a very cool pair of custom made paralettes from Ryan Pitts of Stronger Grip. They are excellent for l-sits as well as slightly raised push-ups (we even sometimes do push up walks up and down the two of them). Later I set up the slackline, then decided to get out the throwing knives and throwing stars, and then the Neuro-Grips, and, and... realized I had managed to drag out a whole bunch of stuff into the yard.  Before bringing everything back inside, I thought it might be fun to create a couple of non-stop sequences that used nearly everything in some way, and that kind of traveled from piece to piece.  So here we go!

I should also share the workout from earlier which was inspired by Zach Even-Esh's awesome book, The Encyclopedia of Underground Strength and Conditioning. My new client is already extremely athletic, and the ideas in his book are great for the current situation. Especially since they really work on not just strength, but power.  I love working on power, but that's a dicussion for another time. Short version: being able to generate power is super useful for all kinds of things in life.

Live from downtown Durham, answers to Neuro-Grip questions! And Why I Haven't Been Doing Regular Pushups in Workouts

Dragon Door Neuro-Grips!
A lot of very cool things are happening at the moment, which is great, but it has kept me from writing as much as I'd like to here!  So in order to make up for that this will be a full featured fun post, hopefully including topics you're jazzed about as much as I am.
First off, I recently had an email inquiry: "what else can you do with Neuro-Grips besides push-ups?" I didn't know this person's fitness level so I provided a large variety of options. After writing them out, I was inspired to live stream some of them along with various tips from a really cool place in downtown Durham.

Another Epic Photoshoot with Jon Bruney and Dragon Door in Chicago!

Almost four years ago to the day, we had the photo shoot for Jon Bruney's awesome book, Neuro-Mass. It was and still is probably the most challenging photoshoot I've ever experienced--it was two days of some of the most difficult and creative strength moves I'd seen at the time. The incomparable RKC Team Leader, PCC Instructor, and shredded ab-monster Matt Maher was on that shoot and frankly defied gravity a few times too.
Neuro-Grips and Neuro-Mass Photo shoots 2017 and 2013

The Neuro-Mass shoot was the first time I'd ever tried the now infamous Neuro-Grip pushup handles. Four years ago we only had the prototypes which if you look super close in the book you can see that they are handmade and a little rough hewn.  Then, the first generation offered by Dragon Door was cast from solid aluminum and had this crazy tuning-fork like CLANG if you happened to smack 'em together or strike them on the ground even slightly. Depending on your preferences this could be a pro or a con! Thankfully the next version (and the ones that are currently being sold on Dragon Door) were further improved, they're made from steel, the larger tubing "handle" part being heavy gauge but hollow so they aren't excessively heavy. (I like to toss them in my backpack for outdoor workouts) Since the new Neuro-Grips aren't cast, they don't have a mold mark--and that's a welcome change for high rep training!
