Rings of Power by Mike Gillette Cool new book from Mike Gillette about Ring Training for all fitness levels. Being on this shoot with Mike was like working with a real live action hero! (And I got to put a cinderblock on him too!) Mike knows his stuff and shares everything you need to know for his versatile go-anywhere ring training.  Full progressions of every exercise, workout plans, and all the know-how to take the training as far as you wish. Good stuff, and yes, that's me on the left side of the cover  :)


Another Epic Photoshoot with Jon Bruney and Dragon Door in Chicago!

Almost four years ago to the day, we had the photo shoot for Jon Bruney's awesome book, Neuro-Mass. It was and still is probably the most challenging photoshoot I've ever experienced--it was two days of some of the most difficult and creative strength moves I'd seen at the time. The incomparable RKC Team Leader, PCC Instructor, and shredded ab-monster Matt Maher was on that shoot and frankly defied gravity a few times too.
Neuro-Grips and Neuro-Mass Photo shoots 2017 and 2013

The Neuro-Mass shoot was the first time I'd ever tried the now infamous Neuro-Grip pushup handles. Four years ago we only had the prototypes which if you look super close in the book you can see that they are handmade and a little rough hewn.  Then, the first generation offered by Dragon Door was cast from solid aluminum and had this crazy tuning-fork like CLANG if you happened to smack 'em together or strike them on the ground even slightly. Depending on your preferences this could be a pro or a con! Thankfully the next version (and the ones that are currently being sold on Dragon Door) were further improved, they're made from steel, the larger tubing "handle" part being heavy gauge but hollow so they aren't excessively heavy. (I like to toss them in my backpack for outdoor workouts) Since the new Neuro-Grips aren't cast, they don't have a mold mark--and that's a welcome change for high rep training!

Neuro-Mass Photoshoot with Jon Bruney, Matt Maher and Dragon Door!

Recently returned home from an incredible experience in MN with Dragon Door.   Watching the seasoned photography crew from so many past Dragon Door books come together and work so seamlessly was a sight to be seen!   While I had a very short stint as a "model" as a kid in the 1980s (funny story, involves a giant pool of cold water, goggles, and a whole lot of clothes pins), then in the early 2000s my ear and nose appeared in a jewelry catalog, it hasn't been until age 36 that my "modeling career" started taking off by appearing most recently in Al Kavadlo's Pushing The Limits (it's in ebook form now, coming soon in paperback!).   Considering I'm at least 1 full foot too short for "runway" this is pretty exciting :)  Anyway - after meticulously preparing for the shoot (food was business as usual, but my workouts included exploring some of the unfamiliar and quite innovative movements which we'd be photographing for the book).  I don't fast or "diet down" like some folks do for photoshoots - this is especially important for the "performance-dependent" type of shoots I tend to do.  I'm also in permanent mostly-maintenance mode anyway.  If I were to try to do these kind of strenuous shoots in a calorie deficit, it just wouldn't work out well at all.

This has been the week for very meaningful conversations. In addition to many messages, emails, and phone calls with friends and fellow instructors/trainers and aspiring instructors, I've conducted over 5 very intensive interviews this past week (and this week isn't nearly over yet). I can't wait for them to be ready to share. Some of the personal stories are inspiring to say the least.  But I don't want to give anything away just yet.     Many of the non-interview conversations brought up a number of questions that more people may want to hear answered, so I'll address them here too!
