Rings of Power by Mike GIllette

Rings of Power by Mike Gillette Cool new book from Mike Gillette about Ring Training for all fitness levels. Being on this shoot with Mike was like working with a real live action hero! (And I got to put a cinderblock on him too!) Mike knows his stuff and shares everything you need to know for his versatile go-anywhere ring training.  Full progressions of every exercise, workout plans, and all the know-how to take the training as far as you wish. Good stuff, and yes, that's me on the left side of the cover  :)

Austin Adventures with the SCC and HKC - Plus a Workout and Mobility Stuff!

Ever have one of those trips where you come back and you know you've changed in some way? This was definitely one of those!  And I mean that in a good way.  There was no shortage of adventure and excitement this past weekend in Austin, Texas.  In fact for one of the more action packed parts, I am only half-joking about exaggerating it a little and writing it up as a screenplay... I've already cast Danny Trejo as one of the villains.  Long story short, we are unstoppable.

Tao Health and Fitness, SCC, HKC Austin Instructors and Host

Back to the SCC and HKC... I led the SCC on Saturday, and Senior RKC Paul Britt led the HKC on Sunday.  The folks that showed up to each workshop (and some showed up for both) were extremely impressive not only with their physical abilities, but with their professionalism, experience, and understanding of the human condition.

The SCC and the HKC really have what it takes for personal trainers, instructors, physical therapists, etc. to make HUGE improvements in the lives of others. Those two programs both separately and together have incredible toolkits that can be scaled for ANYONE. I think that's what I love most about these two powerful one-day workshops. (BTW, Dragon Door is in the process of adding more dates to the website... so keep watching over there!).

During the SCC, we covered a TON of information... if you've ever wondered how to adapt the progressions in Convict Conditioning to personal training, small group training, or even group fitness, then the SCC is for you. I love having the participants coach each other... then swap partners so that everyone gets to troubleshoot and work with people of different sizes, shapes, genders etc. We all have different strengths and limitations, so being able to work with different people during the workshop can be so powerful. If you come to one of my SCCs, you'll get a lot of practice teaching, coaching, and troubleshooting--and I hope you ask a lot of questions (because I love to answer questions....and then blog about it later... never feel bad about asking me questions, I see them all as gifts!!)

While we didn't do a formal "workout" in the SCC, during the entire workshop we explore the progressions and at the end I give an interactive lecture about both progression and program design so that everyone is primed to rock their classes come Monday morning (or whenever their next training session is).  At the HKC the next day, Paul had short workouts throughout the day.  The one before lunch was a great simple workout that's just fantastic for a mixed level group and one kettlebell per person. The only real restriction is that you need to do an EVEN number of rounds of this workout, but other than that, people should choose an appropriate weight kettlebell, then work at their own pace:

  • 10 kettlebell swings
  • Kettlebell suitcase carry to a determined distance (one side only)
  • 30 second plank
  • Repeat, being sure to use the other side for the suitcase carry!

If you're experienced and choose a heavy kettlebell, this one can get "interesting" really fast as it challenges the midsection BIG TIME with every move. Beginners can get in a whole lot of quality practice with a lighter kettlebell.

Matt at Tao Health & Fitness in Austin was an incredible host, he knows where all the good food is and is a great instructor as well. It's always excellent to work with someone who has great leadership skills and a gifted staff. If you are in the Austin area, do yourself a favor and check out his classes.  Rumor has it he has some new SCC and HKC certified instructors on staff now, too! :)

After scarfing down some well-deserved "breakfast for dinner" at a local Austin diner, Matt and I came back to Tao Health & Fitness to do a little bit of training. I made a rough video that will show you the mobility sequence I'm currently working on (make sure you watch this because my socks almost make me face-plant at one point HAHAHA).

Can't wait to schedule up more SCC workshops, I love teaching and I love how the awesome people who show up to Dragon Door workshops make every workshop fun, different, challenging, and exciting. I'm NEVER scripted, and while I cover all the required info, I love to tailor what we're doing to the people who have spent their valuable time and money to learn more. It's an HONOR to teach, I take it very seriously, and love every minute of it.

Hope to see you at a workshop soon! :)
